The use of a work is subject to the author’s consent. However, Swiss Copyright Law defines a number of uses which do not require such consent. The use of copyrighted works in the classroom is one example. The Federal Conference of Cantonal Directors of Public Education (EDK – Konferenz der Kantonalen Erziehungsdirektoren) pays a lump-sum amount to the collective administration societies for such uses.
FAQs about educational uses:
- Can a teacher show a recorded television programme to schoolchildren at camp?
- Can schoolchildren’s works be displayed on internet?
- What should a school bear in mind when staging a play?
You will find the answer to these questions and others under “What’s Right”. The EDK and the five Swiss copyright societies prepared this brochure containing many practical examples. The accompanying CD-Rom contains basic legislation, explanatory notes and information on the collective administration societies, a comprehensive glossary and many FAQs on all aspects of copyrights – including with respect to digital media.
